5 Tips to Develop Your PR Image

In the modern-day workplace, creating a strong and unique public relations (PR) image can make or break your career — building a strong foundation for yourself can put you miles ahead of your competitors.  In order to develop your own personal PR image, consider these five tips: 

1. Know your audience 

Before you consider building your PR image, you must identify your target audience. A target audience is the intended audience or readership of a publication, advertisement or other message. Your main audience will eventually consist of a number of different groups that may include fellow students, professors, coworkers, partners, employees and customers. In order to identify your personal target audience, you must be as specific as possible. When you identify these groups, you’ll have the opportunity to create an effective PR image that will target your audience and address their needs, concerns and wants. 

2. Know your goals

Next, you must determine what you want in your career — you won’t know the best way to achieve your goals if you don’t know what you want! Consider building both short-term and long-term objectives. When developing your PR image, you want future employers to know exactly what you are working and striving towards.  

3. Create a brand

Personal branding is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands. Your personal brand defines your image — who are you? What makes you stand out from the crowd? Why are you the best candidate for any position? Your brand should be relevant, simple and speak to who you are as a working professional while also staying true to yourself.  

4. Create original content

Creating your own original content is extremely important because it’s how you’ll get your target audience interested in your PR image. Be sure to create interesting, engaging, creative and shareable content to elevate your image. This content can be anything — a personal blog, pictures, Twitter or Instagram profile; anything that will engage your target audience and keep them coming back for more. 

5. Utilize social media

In today’s technological advanced era, social media is the easiest way to promote your PR image. Social media is a powerful tool to connect with your target audience, share original content and get your name out there for employees. Create branded social media accounts — such as Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn — to promote both yourself and your projected PR image.
