Blogs: What They Are and Why You Should Start One
Blogging is something that has been around for the better part of twenty years. A blog as defined by Merriam-Webster is, “a regular feature appearing as part of an online publication that typically relates to a particular topic and consists of articles and personal commentary by one or more authors”. There is a blog for just about every topic imaginable, and many people use blogs to brand themselves both personally and professionally. Here are a few reasons why blogs are important, and why you should start one.
Blogs are A Creative Outlet
While most blogs are typically meant to be opinionated and informative, there is still room for creativity within your writing. When writing a personal blog, you have free reign to make it yours by writing in a unique style, including different graphics, and many other things. With a personal blog, there is so much room to make it your own, which is necessary for getting your personal brand out there!
You Can Write About What You Enjoy
Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of blogging is that you can write about what you want! For example, if you are a big fan of movies, you can start a blog where you review your favorite movies or rank your favorite movie characters. Writing about what you want not only makes it more enjoyable for you to write, it also helps show readers who you are and what you enjoy.
You Can Use Blogs as Writing Samples
While not every job requires a writing sample, there are a good amount of jobs that still like to see what you have written. Blogs are a perfect way to show a potential employer your writing skills, as well as show off your personal or professional brand (or both). It is always important to have examples of your work, and blogs are a great way to showcase work that you enjoyed doing!
Blogs are everywhere nowadays, and that is a good thing! All three points in this blog are reasons to start blogging, but they certainly are not the only ones. Find something you’re interested and start writing about it. There are probably lots of people who would love to read about what you’re interested in, and it may just inspire someone else to start blogging too.
