Megan Stephenson is a second-year master’s student in communication. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and Arabic language and culture from the University of Cincinnati in 2015. Megan’s focuses include: cultural communication, international education and narrative health. Her focus within UCommunicate will be working with the Internal Communication team strategizing plans and best practices.
In addition to classes and research, Megan is a graduate assistant at UC International. Her role consists of managing the IPALs – a group of domestic and international volunteers, working toward creating friendships and inclusivity among international and domestic students. She has worked on external marketing and communication through advertising the IPALs and working on spreading their mission throughout campus while also strategizing best practices for internal communication within the IPALs group.
A large part of Megan’s work also focuses on event planning. She was the main contact for a group of 13 international students studying at UC for three weeks over the summer. She planned their weekend trips, welcome and farewell dinners, class field trips, and a tour of the city. She also worked on events like Country Pumpkins and the New International Student Retreat which can consist of more than 100 international students plus volunteers and staff.
Working with international students, studying Arabic, and traveling abroad has given Megan the unique opportunity to practice communication across cultures which requires openness, patience and willingness to ask questions. She hopes to continue traveling and increasing her cultural communication interests through reading, learning and communicating.
