What is PRSSA?
PRSSA, the Public Relations Student Society of America, is a pre-eminent, pre-professional society to help aspiring PR students professionally develop themselves and launch their career. According to their website, “PRSSA aspires to advance the public relations profession by developing ethically responsible pre-professionals who champion diversity, strive for an outstanding education and advocate for the profession.”
I’m currently the President of the University of Cincinnati chapter and am a self-proclaimed PRSSA nerd. Our chapter is one of over 340 chapters across the U.S. and in Argentina, Colombia and Peru. We are assisted by Cincinnati PRSA and PRSSA National to build mutually beneficial relationships between students and professionals.
If you are attaining the PR certificate or are interested in the public relations major, I highly recommend joining UC PRSSA; it will give you the opportunities and tools you need to succeed. When I was a sophomore, actively seeking ways to meet people and get involved, UC PRSSA was a no-brainer. I attended my first meeting and instantly felt at home because the executive board members were so welcoming and engaging. Now, as the President, I try to maintain a space that encourages involvement and growth for members.
Becoming a member of PRSSA gives you access to PRSSA publications, MyPRSA, webinars, scholarships, awards, national and regional events, networking groups, career resources, leadership positions on executive board and the student-run PR firm. This semester, six members of the University of Cincinnati chapter will be attending the International Conference in San Diego, CA. In the spring semester, members can attend Regional Conference and National Assembly.
The chapter’s student-run PR firm, UC Influence, completes a strategic PR campaign for a local business or non-profit every semester. This semester they are working with UC’s Communication Department to assist with the launch of the new PR major. The firm is an amazing way to get hands-on experience outside of the classroom! UC Influence meets every Wednesday 4:30-5:30 P.M. in McMicken Hall, Room 149.
The University of Cincinnati’s chapter of PRSSA holds biweekly meetings on Thursdays, 6-7 P.M. in McMicken Hall, Room 250. There is always free pizza and great discussions. Attend a meeting and join UC PRSSA on CampusLINK to learn more and get involved, you won’t regret it!
